Wax Food Store
We set out to find an area of town catering to restaurant owners. We were looking, in paprticular, for wax food stores.
As you've probably seen in previous posts, restaurants in Japan show their "menu" with wax food in a case outside of their restaurant. Similar to the way some restaurants in the US hang their menu outside, but way cooler. The food looks SO real, it's hard to believe they didn't cook it that day and put it outside for showing.
To be sure, we decided to check out the wax food stores. There are only a few in the city, all in the same area of Shitimachi, outside of Asakusa.
In store number one, the Sample Shop, we were floored by the prices. I think we both assumed we could buy food for fun! One bowl of a tofu dish cost 8,190Yen ($80!!; see below). How in the world do these restaurants stock their menu displays? Wow!
They had a great sushi clock (thought of you, Kathy) with wax sushi fastened around the hours, but it was between 16,000 and 20,000Yen so I had to pass. This store even has a website! http://www.maiduru.co.jp/ It is in Japanese, but you can still see the cool pictures, AND the sushi clocks.

Store number two wasn't much cheaper than the first. But they did have magnets, keychains and cell phone charms, all featuring small versions of the wax food. They had a great selection of wax beers and cocktails, starting at only 8,400Yen each! Too bad Andrew wasn't awake to enjoy. He'd have wanted one of everything to "cook" back in the room!
