My First Two Kanji Characters

I'm such a novice. Errr such a VERY VERY BEGINNER. Here are the first two characters I learned. Let me point out that I learned these on my first visit here... but I haven't progressed much further at this point...

The black character means CLOSE (as seen on an elevator button) and the green character means OPEN (again, as seen on an elevator button).

You may notice that the "outside" pieces on both characters are the same, so I checked one of the books Taka bought me to find out what it means. Turns out, it means "gate". 門
